carne asada

The local street cat at hydration is in the process of training me on how to pet her. She is siting in my lap while I pet her. Ahe extends her claws while lightly scratching my forearm, All the while staring me straight in the eye. So I stroke her fur with my nails instead of my palm. She then purrs herself to sleep.

this is why I love my job

yesterday I got a new project. when I first got it I thought it was hopeless, and I would have to abandon the application. by the end of the day I knew exactly what to do. I love finding solutions to problems. I wrote up the response this morning. now I just have to wait and see if the patent office agrees with me. of course that will probably be 6 months from now.

i am using my iPhone to post this because my work blocks sites like this. they I think I should be spending all my time on work tasks. they are right of course. to bad they don't give me enough work to keep me busy.

the inputs

movie: I just watched Flashback of a Fool. I liked it. A bit about self-indulgence
books: I just go volume 1 of Bloom County. It has a little bit of Academic Waltz but not the whole series which is to bad. I just finished reading Unseen Academicals which was a nice bit of fluff.
music:  I went to see Brigitte Handley and the Dark Shadows last night.  They were pretty good.
politics:  i wish the news would start posting names about which politicians are that are opposing the bills.  It would also be  nice to know who their opposition is.

Margret Cho

Margret Cho has a new show, Drop Dead Diva.  I love her.  But the show is a Lifetime Channel girlie freak show.

High Rise Condos in Downtown San Jose

Although they are impractical for me.  I like to keep an eye on the high rise condos that have been built in Downtown San Jose.  I have seen a lot of puff pieces in the San Jose Mercury and elsewhere about the performance of these properties.  I have not seen any data about how they have been selling.  So I took it upon myself to check out the assessor's office data on these properties.  There are four complexes in downtown San Jose that include:  The 88; The Axis; City Heights; and Three Sixty Residences.  Three Sixty Residences hasn't started selling.

Since June of 2007 a total of 635 units have been built and put on sale in Downtown San Jose.
109 of these units have been sold.
City Heights has sold 57 out of 125 units since June 2007.
The Axis has sold  45 out of 330 units since August 2008.
The 88 has sold 7 out of 180 units since May 2009.

Chart of sales

Given the current state of sales I don't think all the inventory will be sold until 2015,
Of course once Safeway comes in things might change.
Things might also change once 360 recidences start selling.
It is to early to tell what is really happening with The 88.

Patent thoughts

I went to a roundtable discussion on Bilski today.
Here are some of my thoughts.
People tend to forget that patents are a type of social contract. They are often thought of as a reward and motivational tool for inventivness.
I like to think of them as an exchange of goods. Trade secrets for a limited monopoly.

Attack

I was walking under a trellis today.  A bird landed on my head , scratched a little than flew away and landed on the trellis.  I looked at it wondered what the fuck, this is something new.  I walked on, it than flew by my head as I ducked.

This makes me think of so many awful, lame jokes, it makes my head hurt.

New toy

I bought a new toy today.   I am not sure if I like it.  The fan is a little louder than I am used to.  I hope I get used to it.  Now comes the annoying part of transfering all of my programs and data.

Cure for PTSD?

This article describes a way to use medication to lessen the impact of traumatic events for the treatment of PTSD. This is potential good news for returning vets, rape victims and victims of child abuse. If this works the upside could be very dramatic. For the individuals effected, their families and for society in general. I guess we will see general use of this technique in 5-10 years.

Effect of post-retrieval propranolol on psychophysiologic responding during subsequent script-driven traumatic imagery in post-traumatic stress disorder.

There are also some scary possibilities for this technique. Could this also be used to attack political beliefs. Could this be used by interrogators. Could this be used to brainwash people. Who I am is dependent upon my memories.

Today

Today I waited for the mailman in vain. I then want to Cafee Trieste and hung out with Shelly and Andrea. Andrea said that someone has written a book and a movie about Downtown San Jose in the times of Cactus Club. I am very curious.
I then want to Hydration and ran into Lisa, David, Ruben and Dora and hung out for a bit.
Afterwards I went to the Voodoo Lounge I had a drink felt weird so I went to the Caravan Lounge and had another drink.  I ran into David and hung for a bit.  I met a girl, made out for a little bit, she asked if I remembered her name I said no.  She disappered soon afer that.

iphone

I was thinking of joining the iPhone cult.  The extra charge for the data plan comes out to 360/year.  Whereas the data plan for any other phone is half that at 180/year.  That just seems wrong.  Maybe I should join the iTouch cult.

Lately

Coachella was good.  Although I was sick.  I got bronchitis.  Which sucks. I also missed many days of work.  I was better by Monday.  But I stayed home out of consideration of the current swine flu hysteria .  Today I got to work early, I spent most of the day working on an application.  I was still a little tired, even though I have been sleeping a lot.  After work, I rode my bike down to Cafee Trieste, I had some tea and read  some of Ask the Dust.  It was getting cold so I rode down to Trials Pub, had some chicken curry and a drink.  I ran into an old friend which was very nice.

Coachella Day 3

Okay this is third time I have attempted to post this.  I hate using other peoples computers.  Coachella is good.  The music is Good.  Leonard Cohen was great.  Glascandy was an intersting suprise.  The Hand of Man was really cool.  All of the art is really cool.  As always it is rare for me to talk to strangers.  Which is disapointing.

Wednesday

I went to the Blank Club tonight.  Ran into a couple of friends and saw some good bands.  Touch My Rash opened.  They were fun but i think they need more practice.   TAT a band from the UK were really good.  Suicidal Barfly followed they were really good to, the jazzy kind of rock and roll that I love, reminded me of Devil Doll.

The Roots?

What? The Roots are the house band for the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.  I guess I have to watch Jimmy Fallon now.

Saturday Night

Tonight I went to the Hard Work Cafe for and 80's night.  It was an interesting place.  but I wasn't feeling it.  So I went home and rode my bike to the Caravan.  A rock-a-billy band was playing. They were pretty good they played an Elvis cover and a Chuck Berry cover plus some other stuff.  I ran into some friends and acquaintances.   A guy sat next me at  Caravan and started hitting on me.  It made me sad.  It would be nice if women hit on me instead of men.

Friday night

I went to Agenda for an 80's night/edge reuninon.   I didn't run into anybody that I knew from the Edge.  The music was alright.  The crowd was a little light.  There are two things I  like about Agenda.  The beautiful wood dance floor and the bartenders.  I left early and stopped by Johnny V's for  Blood and Glitter.  I like the music at Johnny V's better.  It was all music I haven't heard before.

MySpace music

I am suprised.  I have actually found a real use for MySpace.  I go to MySpace.  Click on Music.  Click on Shows.  Enter my Zip Code.  Select Bands I'm are friends with.  I now have a list of shows that I want to see.   Of course this assumes that a band's profile includes actual tour data with actual zip codes.  Which isn't always true.
